Spend a day with renowned woodturner John Jordan as you learn to turn a hollow form on a wood lathe and embellish it with carving, beading or other techniques. Besides registering for this class, you may also want to attend a demonstration he is giving on Friday, March 9, at BARN; learn more about that at this link.

Jordan, whose work has been featured on national turning magazine covers several times, will share tips he's developed over the years. You will learn techniques that, with practice,  will enable you to turn vases, urns and lidded bowls. You will also learn how to emphasize the beauty and character of the wood with embellishment.

Jordan will also cover techniques for turning green wood and share information about turning wood with the pith included, a great advantage in our area, where fallen green wood is so plentiful.

Prerequisites:  Students must have a moderate level of skill in turning small bowls. You can qualify by either of these steps:

• Successfully complete BARN's Introduction to Bowl Turning class.
  
• Or demonstrate to a BARN turning instructor (Jamie Straw or Bruce Claiborne) a reasonable level of skill in mounting and shaping a bowl form. To arrange an appointment for this, contact Jamie at (360) 551-9233.

You don't need to be an expert to take this class, but you do need a reasonable comfort level and skill in handling bowl gouges and an understanding of how to mount a bowl in a chuck safely. Jamie will be available during February open studio sessions to assist turners and help them solidify their bowl skills.

• Materials and all necessary tools will be provided at no extra fee.
• Students must wear tops with short-sleeves or tight cuffs, and closed and comfortable shoes.  No rings, bracelets, necklaces or dangle earrings. Long hair must be tied back. Fleece clothing is not recommended, as the shavings cling to it.
