Capitalizing on the ways glass can be arranged in and flows from a crucible, this innovative workshop will teach you how to create predictable and reproducible custom cane and murrine using the vitrigraph kiln. Murrine (or murrini) is an Italian term for colored patterns or images made in long rods of glass that are revealed when cut in cross-sections.

Discussions and demonstrations will cover:

• Choosing a vitrigraph kiln setup.
• Designing and picking colors for murrine.
• Pulling like a pro.
• Cutting/chopping murrine.
• Examples of murrine in a variety of kiln-glass projects.

The only prerequisite is the ability to confidently cut sheet glass and a willingness to have a bit of fun while learning. 

The first day will include an introduction to the vitrigraph kiln, demonstrations, and the beginning of the design process. On the second day, you'll focus on your own projects, pull your own murrine, and begin creating a sample tile. The final day will allow a review of the  samples and a discussion of other ways murrine can be used in kiln-fused projects.

A $188 materials fee, included in the price of the class, covers everything you'll need to make a full pot of murrine and a sample tile. 

Class Policies

• Ages 18 and up are welcome.
• Closed-toe shoes and long pants are required in the Glass Studio at all times. 
• As with all torchwork, wear cotton pants and long-sleeved, cotton shirts. Avoid wearing synthetic materials/fabrics as these are more likely to catch fire.
• Long hair should be tied back.
