Learn French Pictorial Tapestry techniques by designing and creating your own original piece. Transform your original design into color and weave, learning this traditional tapestry style. Students at both the beginning and advanced levels will find this class filled with inspiration to develop your weaving skills.
This class is in three sessions, starting with the first session which will be online, as a real time workshop creating your design and doing a color study. The first session will begin at 10:00 AM through 12:00 PM, then break for lunch and resume again at 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
Then on the next two Saturdays, (February 19 and 26), we will meet at BARN in the Fiber Arts Studio to transfer our design to our weaving. Instructor Nancy Klos brings her wealth of experience and enthusiasm to guide us through this tapestry exploration.

Session 1 - MORNING Session: First things first:
Drawing a Cartoon for your Pictorial Tapestry: Determining the lines for your design
Online with Zoom in a real time workshop with Q/A at the end. Saturday, Feb. 12, 2022, 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
Learn to create an effective and successful drawings, developing your “cartoon” for tapestry involves several steps. In this Zoom session, Nancy will demonstrate through a series of samples how to easily achieve your design and then transfer it by drawing onto the warps of your loom.
Materials provided by student for session 1:
- Artist Sketchbook (8 x 10 OR 9 x 12”- spiral bound)
- A set of three sharpies and a fine point black ink pen
Session 1 - AFTERNOON Session: Planning Your Palette:
Color Sampling and Planning your Palette for Tapestry. The language of color in yarn.
Online with Zoom in a real time workshop with Q/A at the end.
Saturday, Feb. 12, 2022, 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
Color is many things and comes in many forms: warm, cool, bright, neutral, complementary, analogous to name just a few elements. Light is absorbed in and on the surface of tapestry. It is therefore necessary to learn the Importance of color relativity when mixing yarns for effects. n this session we will look at examples of how to plan for better and more intentional results in your designs.
Materials: We will be using the DMC yarn that is included in your kits. Instructions for how to cut these will be included in the kit so that you can follow along and do some of these exercises with the instructor in real time. Kits will vary in colors.
Session 2: Starting Your Tapestry Project
at BARN in the Fiber Arts Studio
Saturday, Feb. 19, 2022, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
In this session, students will learn the fundamental first steps in how to weave tapestry. It will cover weaving techniques, including warping, tensioning, and basic tapestry skills. The class will be taught on pre-warped looms for every participant.
In the morning session we will draw on original designs to warps, twine set the hem and create color studies for individual projects and weave!
In the afternoon session, we will continue to weave and develop color mixes, tapestry technique, and get a good handle on your projects for the week! At the end of the day, we will have a brief critique and review.
Bring a sack lunch, as we will be taking an hour lunch break.
Session 3: Mapping the Second Half and-FINISHING
at BARN in the Fiber Arts Studio
Saturday, Feb. 26, 2022, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Morning: we will start with a review of participants projects and a Q & A session. Then there will be weaving time with individual support. Nancy will demonstrate more tapestry techniques.
Afternoon: we will finish the second half of your projects, along with advice for display and hanging.
Kits price $60.00 (included in registration)
Included in the kit to be picked up at BARN:
- A set of DMC 3ply yarns (#40 ct.).
- #10 additional skeins for projects (in class)
- Looms warped and ready to weave on (session 2 & 3)
- Technical Handouts including charts and how-to’s.
- 30 day access to the Zoom video session 1 for registered students. A link will be emailed to you after the session is over.

IMPORTANT Details for all three sessions:
- Last day to register: Tuesday, February 8th. This will allow us enough time to assemble kits to be readied for pick up at BARN. Cancellations for refunds or credits will not be issued after February 8th. You will receive an email when kits are ready for pickup.
- A Zoom link to join session 1 will be sent to you one day before session 1 begins (Friday, February 11th). Please watch for this email.
- For sessions 2 & 3 in the Fiber Studio: BARN will be practicing safety measures for the health and well-being of all participants, in accordance with state and CDC guidelines. Instructor Bio:
Nancy Klos has made her home in Portland, Oregon since 1985. Here she established Klos Studios in 1990. Although she has lived in many parts of the country she considers the PNW her real home. Here in her studio “Atelier NAN” she creates drawings, paintings, mixed media, Sumi.e ink paintings & numerous commissions for a national clientele.
Nancy has offered workshops throughout the Northwest: Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Northern California. In Fall 2018, Ms. Klos was invited to teach at The Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, CA. In the years 2014-2016 Nancy was the Artist-In-Residence at The Lan Su Chinese Garden in Portland, OR. Her work from this time appeared in both Plein Air Magazine & Outdoor Painter in articles written by New York Arts writer Bob Bahr. In Fall of these three years she also lived and worked at the Hawk Creek Gallery in Neskowin, OR. as the Resident Artist for 4-6 weeks at a time. There she produced a body of work as her response to the ocean along the Oregon Coastline.
Ms. Klos has been a Guest Instructor at The Portland Art Museum, Portland State Masters in Education Program, Sitka Center of Art and Ecology, Menucha Creative Arts Community, Coupeville Arts Guild on Whidbey Island, The University of Idaho Convergence Conference. Her artwork and process has been filmed for Oregon ArtBeat, HGTV’s Modern Masters and she served on a panel for Oregon Considered-“State of the Arts in Oregon.”(Eve Epstein of OPB radio).
In August 2017 her oil painting “Peppers” was featured in the special section for Women Artists of the Pacific NW-an annual feature in SW ARTS Magazine!
