About

Offered in four-week blocks, this ongoing class accommodates carvers of all skill levels.

  • Beginners work on a project designed by the instructor, using wood provided. The project includes all the steps, including roughing out the basic shape with power tools and sharpening tools.
  • Experienced carvers can opt to work on personal projects, using wood they provide.

Each session will generally include a discussion of carving traditions from some part of the world. Most of the time will be spent carving. Carvers work at their own pace, with no deadline to complete pieces. Students who want more carving time between class sessions can also work during open studios, which are listed on the Woodworking Calendar, and during the free Carving Afternoons on Sundays from 1 to 3 pm.

Details

  • If you register as a Guest or Member "with materials," the instructor will provide wood suitable for beginning carvers.
  • If you know the basics of wood carving and want to work on an ongoing project or a new one of your own design, register as a Guest or Member with "no materials" included in the fee. Bring your own wood.
  • BARN has carving tools you can use. You are also welcome to bring your own carving tools.

Prerequisites

Before the class begins, you must have completed Orientation to the Woodshop, Woodshop Tool Safety  Checkout 1 and Woodshop Tool Safety Checkout 2.

Class Policies

  • Ages 14 and up are welcome.
  • You must wear closed-toe shoes. If you will be cutting a carving blank, you must also wear safety glasses, tie back long hair, and avoid loose-fitting clothing and jewelry. We recommend bringing your own safety glasses.
