About
* This program has prerequisites. Please see below.
If you're looking to tackle a project but want some help to develop and complete it, Woodshop Guided Open Studio with Josh Haza is for you. By signing up for this program, you and up to three other woodworkers will have access to an instructor to guide your work during eight Open Studio sessions. You will share the shop and tools with others, just as in any Open Studio.
Each session will begin with a mini-lesson that covers important woodworking topics, such as how to plan and design a project, select materials, choose appropriate joinery, set-up tools, and select finishes. You will then spend the remainder of the session working on building your project with support from the instructor.
This program promises to help build your woodworking knowledge while increasing confidence and skill using the woodshop. Appropriate projects may include a piece of outdoor furniture, a lanket chest, a knife block, a cutting board, a small table, a small bookcase, a bench, a jewelry box, a shelf, a frame, a stepstool, or whatever else you want to build.
Details:
- Prerequisite: Open to people 14+ years old who have taken * Orientation to the Woodshop, Woodshop Tool Safety Checkout 1 and Woodshop Tool Safety Checkout 2. If you have not already taken these classes, please register for them before enrolling in this program. Please see our calendar here.
- At the first session, the instructor will evaluate proposed projects and offer advice about whether they are likely to be completed during the allotted time. If students want to tackle more complex projects, they must be willing to work on them outside of the scheduled times without the instructor.
- You will need to purchase your own materials before the second session.
- Please dress in the same way you will be expected to do when you use the shop for Open Studio time. Wear closed-toe shoes. Bring and wear safety glasses. Wear hearing protectors when warranted; bring your own or use BARN's. Tie back long hair. Avoid loose-fitting clothing and jewelry; roll up sleeves.
Instructor: Josh Haza. Josh has been building furniture for his home and doing home renovations for a few decades now. He also built equipment for high school physics classes he taught.
