About

Accordion books are long strips of paper folded in a zigzag allowing them to expand and collapse while a tunnel book is a paper structure that creates a 3D scene through layered panels, viewed through a hole. Learn different types of accordion book structures, how to add fold out as well as pop up elements to your accordion books, and have the chance to complete a tunnel book, too.

In the first class, you'll work on a single-sided accordion book, as well as look at different tunnel books for examples, and begin the practice and sketching/planning for the tunnel book. In the second class, you'll cut and measure the final side accordion pieces and inside partitions for your tunnel book, as well as learn how to make a double-sided accordion book. You'll learn about the differences between panorama formats with accordion books, when the book stretches out and ultimately is viewable as one large picture, or you may choose to do different illustrations per each page. We'll go over the concept of editions in bookmaking, and you'll have the chance to make a series of unique accordion books or make the same book more than once by hand for what is called variation editions.

In the third and final class, you'll learn how to add pull out and pop-up elements to your accordion books if you choose, and finish your tunnel book! You'll hand color and decorate the partitions of the book as well as attach any characters or imagery you've drawn, and then we'll work together to construct your final tunnel books. You'll also learn how to add a cover/lid to your book as a finishing touch.
