About

Let’s celebrate Valentine’s Day by making items you can share with friends and  family to show how much you care. (Of course, you can keep these things for  yourself, too!)

Week 1: Patchwork notebook cover. Using fabric scraps and your own  imagination, you’ll sew a cover you can slip over a notebook or journal and turn it into a unique gift.

Skills learned or practiced: cutting, sewing, and pressing straight sewing-machine seams; applying fusible interfacing; choosing coordinating fabric. Bonus: if needed, you’ll get oriented on BARN’s sewing machines.

Week 2: Framed Sashiko stitch sample. You’ll quickly learn how simple hand-stitching on a 4”x4” square of fabric can become an Instagram-worthy piece of art. Put it in a frame, and it’s a great gift for a friend.

Skills learned or practiced: threading a needle; hand-stitched running stitch; adjusting stitch tension.

Week 3: Kumihimo friendship bracelets—we’ll use a traditional, easy Japanese braiding technique on a donut-shaped disk to braid several bracelets. After your first one, you might want to get creative and add a clasp or beads, or you might want to try a square tool to make a different kind of braid. You can make a different one for each of your best friends, or make a longer one as a collar for your pet.

Skills learned or practiced: Following braiding pattern; building on basics to make a personalized design.

As always for Maker Mondays in the Fiber Studio you’re welcome to bring your own project and to use BARN tools and supplies to work on your own, too. BARN instructors will help if you need it!
