About

When you build something with wood, the wood can be purely functional, chosen for its width, length and strength. But wood can also be an incredibly beautiful material, with intriguing grain and color. Perhaps you've seen a coffee table or other piece of furniture built of thick slabs of wood with swirling, multicolor grain.

In this class, you will learn some of the basics of building with slabs, but in miniature, for a shelf. You'll start with a thick slab of locally milled hardwood with intriguing grain and characteristics that others might see as defects. You'll learn how to remove the punky parts, fill in with epoxy, and sculpt the edges to keep a natural look but without sharp edges. Then you'll smooth the surface, cut keyholes to hang your piece, apply finish, and go home with a beautiful piece you can use.

Construction techniques from that project wil be taught in this class, but in miniature.
