About

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in January, let’s use our Youth Maker Monday time for a service project! In addition to creating something to give back, you’ll improve your sewing skills, too! We’ll make personal hygiene purses to be donated to teen girls in Zambia through the Sew Powerful organization.

These purses let girls carry items they need when they have their monthly time so that they can stay in school all month long. Without these purses, these girls stay home from school during that time and then get behind in their schoolwork, making it harder for them to graduate.

In this Maker Monday class, you’ll make at least one crossbody purse to give—you can add a note to say hello to the recipient—and then make a purse for yourself. We’ll start off the class with an orientation on BARN’s brand new sewing machines. Then, for your first purse, you’ll choose from pre-cut pieces for the purse exterior, lining, strap, and pocket. You’ll practice sewing straight seams on both thick and thin fabric to assemble the purse.

For your next purse, you’ll practice cutting straight cuts of fabric with a rotary cutter, adding fusible interfacing, and adding interior pockets. You’ll probably have time for another purse so you can perfect your skills and adjust your design as you like. When all our purses are completed, we’ll pack them up to send to the main office of Sew Powerful in Renton, WA, which will send them on to Zambia, along with other personal hygiene purses made by sewists like you from all over the world.
