To sculpt the dragon head, you'll learn to move metal the way you intend for it to shift under the hammer and anvil — skills to help you become a better and more proficient blacksmith.

Introductory classes are for everyone. Whether you have never stood near a blazing forge or are a bit seasoned, these classes have something to offer regardless of your experience. Beginning classes are designed to teach very specific blacksmithing safety, and techniques, while familiarizing you with forging equipment. Introductory classes focus on hammering skills, while you learn to draw, taper, and upset (upsetting is a way to make your metal thicker, shorter, and narrower and is a more advanced forging technique) your projects. You make your own version of the project.

Blacksmithing is simple but it is not easy. Come and enjoy a day at the forge. But do be careful as this ancient art is very addictive!

Details

A $25 materials fee, included in the class cost, covers two pieces of square steel bar stock 5/8 inches by 12 inches.

Class Policies

• This class is held in an open-air workshop, so dress accordingly.
• Wear natural fiber clothing only (no synthetics that could melt on your skin).
• Wear closed-toe shoes or boots. Sandals are not permitted.
• Ages 14 and up are welcome.
