About

BARN member: $143 (3 sessions)
Non-member: $157
This is a 10-hour class spread over 3 days:
7-8 pm on Wednesday, Feb. 4
9 a.m-4 pm on Saturday, Feb. 7
6-8 pm on Wednesday, Feb. 11

Open to 14 years and older

Build a quilt rack with Bob Spangler as your guide while you explore the steps involved in crafting fine furniture. The class will cover design considerations, mortise and tenon joinery, and use of the jointer, planer, table saw, band saw, and stroke sander, as well as practical shop techniques, pattern shaping, gluing sequence operations, and finishing.

This class will begin with a one-hour intro session from 7-8 pm on Wednesday, Feb. 4, at  BARN's temporary center in Rolling Bay, 11272 Sunrise Dr. NE. Spangler will bring one of his quilt racks, which he sells in galleries for $495-$575, as a model. He will discuss design considerations and wood options.

By the second session, students will need to have wood for their quilt rack. Students can purchase it on their own or from Spangler. BARN members also have access to wood that has been donated to BARN. The cost will vary depending on the type of wood. For cherry, it would probably be around $40-$50.

The actual construction will take place at Spangler's shop, 8495 Oddfellows Road, at the intersection with West Blakely Avenue NE. Session 2 runs 9 am to 4 pm on Saturday, Feb. 7 (bring a sack lunch), and Session 3 is from 6 to 8 pm on Wednesday, Feb. 11.

The class is suitable for woodworkers with limited experience, but you must be checked out on use of the table saw, jointer, planer and band saw beforehand. That can be done at Woodshop Open Studios, listed on the BARN calendar, or by taking the Wood 101 classes on Stationary Power Tools 1 and Stationary Power Tools 2.

INSTRUCTOR: Bob Spangler, owner of Robert Spangler Furnituremaker on Bainbridge,  has been a cabinetmaker and furniture maker since 1973. His work has been included in national shows, public art projects, publications, competitions and private collections. He is a key player on the BARN Woodshop's safety committee. Birgit Josenhans will assist Spangler in teaching this class. See their work at  http://rspangler.com.
