About

Learn to use compression techniques to create intricate designs in borosilicate glass marbles and pendants. You'll pull stringers, make a flat surface to use as a “canvas,” and add dots and lines to create patterns that will be coaxed into the depths of molten glass to form layered petals and other forms.

Details

Experience level: Intermediate. You should be comfortable using the torch, and ideally have practice making marbles. Class will be taught using borosilicate glass but students with experience making soft glass marbles also are welcome.

Details

  • A $15 materials fee, included in the price of the class, covers everything you need.
  • You're welcome to bring any of your favorite tools or additional boro glass you may want to use.

Prerequisites

You should have completed an introductory class such as Intro to Marbles or Bead Bootcamp. Additional practice at a torch prior to this class is highly encouraged.

Class Policies

Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required in the Glass Studio at all times.  Long hair should be tied back.  All-cotton clothing is recommended for torchwork.

Instructor
Laura Arns

Although she's a computer scientist by day, Laura Arns has been working with glass in various ways for more than 20 years during her free time. As a lampworker, she is somewhat unusual because she hasn't specialized but instead works with both borosilicate and soft glass to create beads, marbles, blown ornaments, sculptures, goblets, and more. She particularly enjoys collaborative projects with artists and artisans who work in other mediums. Over the years, she's had the opportunity to learn from numerous well-known lampworkers. A former college professor, she's looking forward to more teaching in BARN's Glass Arts Studio.
