About
Learn something of the rich world of hand planes in this hands-on class. Although not powered, hand planes are powerful tools that come in many variations, enabling woodworkers to achieve results from flattening and squaring up boards to fitting joints precisely and preparing wood for beautiful finishes. Hand planes also are fun to use.
In this class, you'll learn to:
- Identify the anatomy of a plane and the purposes of its parts.
- Set up and adjust a plane to get fine shavings.
- Take long, continuous through shavings using proper grip, stance, and movement.
- Smooth a surface — ideally to the point where you can go directly to finishing.
- Square an edge to the face of a board predictably and easily.
The class also will touch on various planes and their uses, safety, and various ancillary tools and aids.
