About

Learn about traditional proportions for shoji and the terminology involved in making these lightweight, elegant panels. Use Japanese-style hand tools as well as a mortising machine to cut and fit the wooden strips for the screen. Attach rice paper, the traditional covering for the frame.

Details

Wear closed-toe shoes.

During the first two sessions, when you will be working with the mortising machine, you will also need to wear safety glasses, tie back long hair and avoid dangling clothing or jewelry.

A 18" X 24" screen, made of Alaskan yellow cedar and rice paper.

Prerequisites

Students must have completed Orientation to the Woodshop. Multiple sessions are listed on the Woodworking Calendar.

Class Policies

  • Ages 14 and up are welcome.
