About

This class was canceled via email on 1/6 from Karin. Students have been notified and a refund will be issued.~tt

This class has two prerequisites. Please see below.

Ready to create finished pieces of jewelry using the techniques you learned in Add Texture and Dimension to Your Work Using the Hydraulic Press and Create Cuff Bracelets Using the Hydraulic Press? This 4 session class shows you how! Using silhouette dies, cuff-forming dies, and the texturing methods you've learned, you'll create pieces that you'll want to show off!

The instructor will provide the patterns for two projects:

  • A three-layered pendant with a bail or a jump ring, with the layers riveted together
  • A synclastic or anticlastic cuff bracelet

You can make the projects designed by the instructor first, and then create your own custom designs using the skills learned in the class projects. The instructor will work with each participant to develop patterns for their custom designs.

Students will provide their own materials:

  • Materials recommended for pendant project: 6 inches of 16 gauge round sterling silver wire for rivets and jumprings; 2 x 4" of 22 gauge sterling silver sheet. Optional: 2 x 2" of 22 gauge brass or copper sheet for contrast. If you have larger sheets of metal, don't cut them before coming to class.
  • Materials recommended for cuff project: 16, 18, or 20 gauge sterling silver sheet, 2" x 6" (or the length that you need to fit your wrist)
  • Materials to create your custom designed pendant and cuff. For a pendant or other piece using a silhouette die, you will need sheet metal that is at least ¼ inch larger than the silhouette cutout on each side. For example, for a silhouette cutout that is 1.5 x 1.5 inches, your metal should be at least 2 x 2 inches.

The studio will have 3 x 3" pieces of cast acrylic and limited amounts of sterling silver wire for you to purchase. Please bring check or cash to purchase extra materials.

Students should also bring:

Pen, notebook, fine-point Sharpie or other pen that writes on metal, 6" metal ruler

Instructor Bio:

Joan Hammond began working in metal in 1994, when she started taking metalsmithing classes as an antidote to documenting computer software. What she discovered was a medium that not only utilized her previous training in painting, printmaking, and ceramics, but also opened the possibilities of creating art that can be worn. Family artifacts and history, plants and animals, and the textiles and jewelry of non-Western cultures inspire her current work, which Hammond executes using various fabrication techniques, including chasing and repoussé. Her long-time interest in Asian art, which deepened when she studied calligraphy and tea ceremony in Kyoto, Japan, continues to influence her aesthetics and sense of design.

Hammond exhibits locally and nationally, and her work has been published in Metalsmith magazine’s Exhibition in Print. She is a member of the Seattle Metals Guild; has served on the Board of Northwest Designer craftsmen; and co-chaired a national conference for the Society of North American Goldsmiths. She is an active member of BARN.
