About

Learn a construction method pioneered by boat builders in need of strong masts for sailboats. The shaft of your stand-up paddleboard paddle will consist of eight thin pieces connected using interlocking "birdsmouth" joinery, which leaves the center of the shaft hollow to reduce weight but takes advantage of the strength in vertical wood grain. After you cut, glue up, and do final shaping of your paddle, you'll coat it with fiberglass and epoxy, and then with marine varnish to make it waterproof and durable.

Day 1: Discuss design, determine best length. Cut and glue the shaft, blade, and handle parts.

Day 2: Use a block plane to round over the outside of the shaft, and calipers to ensure an even thickness. Use a bandsaw and sander to shape the paddle. Mark and cut the connection between the blade and the shaft, and glue them together.

Day 3: Apply fiberglass and epoxy to the blade. Shape and fine-tune the handle.

Day 4: Apply fiberglass to the shaft, and epoxy the handle. Discuss marine varnishes.

Note: The epoxy must cure for several days before you apply marine varnish. The class will meet again at 1 PM on Sunday, Aug. 11, so you can apply a first coat of marine varnish and learn techniques to help ensure an even coat. You'll go home with a small container of varnish so you can apply additional coats on your own. If you can't attend the Aug. 11 session, you'll get written information and a small amount of marine varnish to apply on your own.
