About

Use a forge to heat pieces of steel red-hot and hammer them into the shape and edge of a knife. Repeat, again and again. Temper and quench. Then grind a final edge. You have a handmade utility (not kitchen) knife to fit with a handle.

The Class Covers

  • Safety and good practices
  • Discussion of “smithing:” forging, drawing, heat-treating, and finishing
  • Introduction to the propane forge and hand tools
  • Shaping and drawing a blank and a blade
  • Heat treating
  • Grinding
  • Drilling or punching and riveting
  • Finishing

Class Goals

  • Learn the basic principles of metallurgy, metal forming, and heat treatment
  • Learn to draw steel through traditional methods
  • Create a knife blade
  • Understanding heat treating

Details

  • Wear long-sleeve shirts and pants in natural fibers and closed-toe shoes of either leather or cotton. Athletic or synthetic shoes and stretch fabrics are prohibited.
  • Alchemy Industrial Arts will provide Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)
  • Ages 14+ and all experience levels welcome.
  • Class is limited to four students to provide good mentoring.
  • BARN reserves the right to cancel this class in the case of low enrollment and will notify registrants. A full refund will be given.
