About
Use a forge to heat pieces of steel red-hot and hammer them into the shape and edge of a knife. Repeat, again and again. Temper and quench. Then grind a final edge. You have a handmade utility (not kitchen) knife to fit with a handle.

- Discussion of “smithing:” forging, drawing, heat-treating, and finishing
- Introduction to the propane forge and hand tools
- Shaping and drawing a blank and a blade
- Heat treating
- Grinding
- Drilling or punching and riveting
- Finishing
Class Goals
- Learn the basic principles of metallurgy, metal forming, and heat treatment
- Learn to draw steel through traditional methods
- Create a knife blade
- Understanding heat treating

- Participants must wear long-sleeve shirts and pants in natural fiber and closed-toe shoes of either leather or cotton. Athletic or synthetic shoes and stretch fabrics are prohibited.
- Alchemy Industrial Arts will provide Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)
- Ages 14+ and all experience levels welcome.
- Class is limited to four students to provide good mentoring.
