About

Experiment with numerous finishes on a sample board to take home and use for future reference. The class is four sessions to allow drying time as you go through all of the steps, learning:

  • How to prepare the surface to help ensure an excellent finish.
  • Which stains and finishes work best on different types of solid wood and plywood.
  • Which tools and techniques to use when applying stains and finishes by hand (i.e. without spraying).
  • Which products are compatible with one another, and which aren't.

If you have a project that needs finishing, you're welcome to bring it or to share a picture of it during the class and consult with the instructor on the best approach. But refinishing is not the focus of this class. If that is your main interest, you may wish to enroll in Repair, Restore and Refinish Furniture.

Details

A $35 materials fee, included in the class fee, covers everything you need.

Instructor
Carol Fiedler-Kawaguchi

Carol Fiedler-Kawaguchi is a professional woodworker who specializes in restoration of antique furniture through her business, C-Saw, on Bainbridge Island. After earning a fine arts degree from Western Washington University, she worked in New Mexico as an apprentice ceramicist and then as an apprentice violin maker, developing her skills in fine woodworking and traditional finishes. She began designing and building custom furniture in the mid-1980s. Her interest in European, Early American, and Asian antiques led her to focus on their restoration and repair.
